These terms of reference serve as a foundational document that outlines the purpose, structure, functions, and responsibilities of the Senior Lawyers’ Committee. Its main objective is to encourage the participation of senior lawyers in LAZ activities.
Title of the Committee: - Senior Lawyers Committee
Authority: - This committee is established under the authority of the Law Association of Zambia at its meeting held on 18th May, 2024.
Purpose: - The purpose of the Senior Lawyers Committee is to leverage the experience, expertise, and leadership of senior lawyers to advance the profession, mentor younger lawyers, and address issues uniquely relevant to senior members of the law society.
Objectives:
i. To provide a platform for senior lawyers to contribute to the profession through mentoring, seminars, and guidance.
ii. To advocate for the interests and address the challenges faced by senior lawyers within the legal community.
iii. To utilize the wealth of experience of senior lawyers in shaping ethical standards, continuing legal education, and professional development activities.
iv. To foster an inclusive community that values the contributions of its experienced members.
v. To advise the law society on matters affecting the senior segment of the legal profession.
Membership: - Members must have at least 20 years of practice experience and should be in good standing with LAZ. There is no cap as to the total number of members.
Roles and Responsibilities:
i. Convenor: To lead the committee, set the agenda for meetings, and represent the committee at law society functions.
ii. Vice Convenor: To assist the Convenor in his/her duties.
iii. Secretary: To schedule meetings, prepare meeting agendas and minutes, and handle the committee’s correspondence.
iv. Members: To actively participate in meetings, contribute to discussions, provide insights based on experience, and carry out tasks and initiatives endorsed by the committee.
Meetings:
- The committee shall meet every month or as deemed necessary by the Chair.
- Meetings can be conducted in-person or virtually, as appropriate.
Reporting:
- The committee will report to the LAZ Council.
- An annual report summarizing activities, recommendations, and outcomes shall be submitted by the Chair.
Resources:
- The LAZ will provide administrative and logistical support to the committee. This includes access to meeting rooms, clerical support, and a budget for activities approved by the LAZ.
Amendments: - This Terms of Reference may be amended as necessary by a majority vote of the LAZ Council.
